Why a Mage?
Mages are great in a group for many reasons. They have several spell abilities to help with crowd control. They can also be one of the best DPS classes in the game, especially with area of effect spells.
They get spell abilities such as conjure food and water, which will help a group if they do not have a cook along with them, or do not have the materials available to make food and drinks. They also get telleport and portal abilities to transfer groups to a different location.
Mages can be very difficult to solo. As one of my good friends and guild mates says, they are “super squishy.” They can only use cloth armor, so they will not be very good at taking damage. They are also prone to spell interruption, as well as using a lot of mana, so there will be many times you will have to stop and rest along the way. However, Mages do get some abilities to counteract these weaknesses. They have some damage reduction spells and abilities, which will be critical if you choose to play alone.
Mages have the ability to use light swords, staves, daggers, and wands. Wands and staves are the weapon choices you start with. These usually come with either spells or status boosts, which are important for a Mage. You can train to learn the others as you level, if you choose to try them out. You may find that you get daggers with status boosts that you
need for your mage. Your magic will be much more important than your weapon. I usually use weapons only for their stat bonuses; I do not even pay attention to the DPS.
If you want to play a Mage, you will have to choose a race that can play it. For Alliance faction characters, you can be Gnome, Human or Draenei. For Horde faction you must be a Troll, Undead, or Blood Elf.
Mages have a variety of stats to be sure to increase whenever possible. The importance of which one to focus on will depend on what you are doing, and which type of spells you use the most.
The most Critical stats for a Mage:
- Intellect—increases mana and spell ability
- Stamina—increases the hit points you have and the amount of damage you can take from
- attacks
- Spell power—increases the effect of spell abilities
- Spell critical strike—increases spell damage to 150% of normal damage
- Spell hit rating—your chance to hit with spells
- Spell haste—reduces cool down reset time for spell abilities
Mages have a wide variety of professions that will do well to boost your leveling potential. Your best choices for professions are Alchemy, Tailoring, Enchanting, or Herbalism. For more on your profession choices, see my Professions Guide here.
