If all you are looking for in a profession is to make money I suggest sticking with gathering professions. Crafting professions can be moneymakers in the end, but at low levels, they can cost you more to level them than they make. Mining is a great profession to level because it has a high demand and sells quickly on the auction house. Mining points can be found all over except in the area of Darnasus. Night Elves have to wait until they get to Dark Shore if they want to level mining.
Skinning is a great option since it can be done as you level. Most beast type monsters will be able to be skinned so you can level this fairly easily, and the hides sell fairly well. The other option for gathering is herbalism. Herbalism can be leveled by gathering plants in found in different areas. With the introduction of Inscriptioning in WotLK, this is in much higher demand than it used to be. The herbs are used for making the different inks used in Inscriptioning.
If you want to be able to make your own armor then skinning and leatherworking is the combination you will want. Blacksmithing is not that great for a Hunter until after level 40 when you can start using light armor. One advantage to leveling leatherworking is the ability to make leather armor kits, which will increase the defense of the armor you put it on. These are useable by anyone so they can be sold at the auction house and usually sell for a descent profit. You can also learn to tan hides and use those for your leatherworking as well as sell them on the auction house for tailoring. By leveling leatherworking you can also make ammo pouches and quivers to carry more ammo for your guns and more arrows for bows. This is a huge help since ranged ammo will be your main source of damage.
My favorite combinatation for Hunter is mining and engineering. This is for several reasons. You can make your own guns. You can make your own ammo. And you get to make Seaforium Charges which can be used if there are no rogues around to pick a lock. You also get to make goggles and scopes which can be equipped. the scopes are great because they will increase the accuracy as well as the damage of your ranged weapons.
Much of the materials you will collect as a miner you can use as a hunter engineer. You can use the stones for grinding into powders, which are used for making your bullets. the ores will be used for making the rough parts for your guns.
As you can see there are many profitable options for a Hunter to choose from for their professions. Check out my affiliate link to a great guide for leveling the best WoW Hunter professions
