This WoW Hunter guide is going to tell you the basics of how to get started. It is one of my favorite classes to play in WoW. I want to show you what a hunter can do, and how to get going to make the most of your Hunter experience. I will discuss the best professions, as well as tips on how to choose a pet. I will also review some of the talent specs you can choose from.

Hunter is not a good job if you like heavy melee jobs. They are best for sitting back and shooting rather than getting into the middle of the fighting. It is best to get the guns ability as soon as possible, as these are the best ranged weapons you can get. If you are playing a Dwarf you will start with this weapon ability.
You can boost your ranged attacks by using the Marksmanship ability tree specs. We will discuss this more later on.
The first thing to do when leveling Hunter is get to level 10 as fast as possible. Because Hunter is not good with melee fighting, this will be the hardest part. Using your ranged attack as much as possible will help you get there fastest.
Once you get to level 10 the Hunter trainer in your starting area will give you the quest to get your pet. You have to go tame 3 different pets that he tells you to get. Once you complete all 3, he will send you on the next part of the quest to see a mentor. They give you the training to heal your pet. Once you complete this, Hunter becomes much more fun to play.
CHOOSING YOUR PET
Now let us talk about pets. Once you start to tame a pet you cannot use any abilities until it is finished. The beast you are trying to tame will attack you, so it is a good idea to use a freezing trap or aspect of the monkey to reduce damage. You cannot pet just anything in the game, but selecting the right pet for you is not that simple. It is really up to the player and how you use your pet. Some options are:
- Cats
- Boars
- Bears
- Wolfs
- Dragonhawks
- Bats
- Raptors
- Crocolisks
- Crabs
These are just some of the many options when choosing a pet. Different pet classes will have different abilities which make them better for different styles of play. My personal favorite pets are Cats. Cats do good DPS and are descent at holding threat. Just make sure you have prowl turned off.
Boars and Bears do a little less DPS but they are better at tanking than Cats. Using a Stablemaster, you can have up to 5 different pets so you can try different ones to see what you like best. Thanks to the WoTLK updates, your pets will be no more than 5 levels lower than you. You still need to make sure you level it up to be even with you before having it tank, otherwise it will be taking a lot more damage, and you will pull threat away from it more often.
Feeding your pet will be a vital part of leveling Hunter. Different pets prefer different foods. If you mouse over the food it will give you the option to feed your pet if it is a type they will eat. Feeding generates happiness, which will increase your pet’s loyalty and health. With maximum loyalty your pet will get a boost to the amount of damage it does for a short time. Any action on your pet, including commands or being attacked, will interrupt the happiness.
