Playing Paladin in World of Warcraft can be a fun job if you enjoy getting in the middle of the fighting and taking a lot of damage.  Paladin can become a great DPS character or they can be a tank. It all depends on how you spec your talents, and if you use those talents effectively.

There are many benefits to playing a Paladin. You get your own class mount, which can save a lot of money.  They have a wide variety of weapons to choose from.  Paladin also gets the spell groups of Blessings and Auras which help with boosting Defense, healing, and mana control.

Paladins from the start get a wide variety of weapons and armor to choose from. The key to selecting the right gear is stamina and defense. These will be your 2 most important attributes to keep high. Stamina is about how much damage you can take; boosting this will give you more hit points as well as boosting your defense. Defense is all about how much it takes before you receive any damage. You can either choose single hand or two handed weapons.

The advantage to single hand weapons is the ability to equip a shield. If you are going to spend a lot of time grouping and DPS is not an issue, single handed weapons are the way to go. If you are playing solo a lot and need the extra damage to make fights go quicker, two handed weapons may be better for you. You can also choose between swords and maces.

There are benefits to each type and it is based on how you play as to which is best for you. Swords do edged weapon damage. Maces do blunt weapon or bashing damage. These both come in one or two handed varieties as well.
Paladins also get a diverse set of spell abilities. You get Auras, Blessings and Seals. A key to remember is you can only have one of each of these active at any one time. Here are some of the benefits you can get from each of these.

Auras

You can only have 1 Aura active at any time.  They apply to all members of the Paladin’s party who are within 30 yards. There is no mana cost for using Auras, and they can be changed whenever you need to.

  • Devotion Aura—attained at level 1, this Aura will increase all party members defense. Great at low levels, this Aura is largely useless as you advance in the game.
  • Retribution Aura—attained at level 16, it reflects damage to enemies when a party member is attacked. This is great for tanking as the Holy damage reflects threat to the Paladin.
  • Concentration Aura—attained at level 22, reduces spell interruption chance while casting. This is great if you are healing during PvP
  • Shadow Resistance Aura—attained at level 28, this aura reduces damage from Shadow spells
  • Sanctity Aura—attained at level 30, It gives an increase to Holy damage done by party members. This Aura is only attainable through the retribution talent tree
  • Crusader Aura—attained at level 62, it gives an increase to speed while mounted for the party
