The Blizzard Authenticator for World of Warcraft
The Blizzard Authenticator is a small device that is soon to be necessary to keep your wow account safe. At first I was confused about exactly what they do and how they will keep my information safe. Well it won’t keep viruses off your computer but it will keep hackers from using your information to steal your account.
There is a big problem with account theft in world of warcraft. The game is extremely popular with somewhere around 11 million subscriptions. The problem with that is there are always people around who want to make a buck off of your misery. You might wake up one day and find your password not working. Next thing you know, your reading messages from your friends asking why your character was logged on all night sitting in a lowbie zone. Eventually you find they have sold off all your gear and taken all your gold.
How this happens is somewhere along the line you end up downloading a virus tainted file, or you visit a site with “phishing” software that maliciously uploads to your computer, or maybe a harmless looking email that you accidentally open. Then you end up with a keylogger that records all the keystrokes and eventually records you logging into world of warcraft. There are countless ways they get your information. One major thing these days is getting linked to a site that looks exactly like an official wow site that asks for your user and password. Be sure you are at the official site and do not trust emails even when they look official, these people can be very tricky.
Now this is where the authenticator comes in. There are 2 types of authenticators, one is a software program that is compatible with the iphone and itouch. You can put this on your phone and anytime you login you will have to load up this app and get the random set of numbers that you will now have to enter after your password. The app is free. The second one is an actual product item that you will have to order (you only pay shipping, otherwise it’s free). It’s a small device (looks like a flash drive) that can fit onto a keychain. There is a little button on it that you press to get your 6 digit code.
When you receive these authenticators, you simply log into your battlenet account and attach the serial number (on the back of the device or the one generated by the app) and tie it to your account. From then on you NEED to have these in order to log into wow. If you lose the device or your phone, you will need to call support and give them the serial number in order for them to help you, so you absolutely need to write down the serial number.
