When looking at the primary professions, there are different types you can learn.
Professions Cont.
There are crafting or production professions. These focus on making, or unmaking in some cases, items that you can sell or trade. Some of these items are ingredients for other craft skills, and some are items for use, such as weapons and armor. These include Blacksmithing, Alchemy, Tailoring, Enchanting, Engineering, Inscriptioning, Leatherworking, and Jewelcrafting.

You can also choose gathering professions. This set of professions will gather items in the field or from enemies, which can be used for the crafting professions. These include Mining, Skinning, and Herbalism.
Craft skill professions
There are many positive and negative attributes to each of the crafting professions. Some are better suited for specific classes, and some are better for your budget.
Blacksmithing
Blacksmithing is one of the most popular World of Warcraft professions . It is not hard to get materials, and you can make weapons used by almost everyone in the game. You can also make heavy armor for the melee classes. This is a great profession if you are Paladin or Warrior. If you are going to level Blacksmithing, you also have to master Mining. With Mining, you will be able to get most of your materials needed for your craft without having to pay high prices at the auction house.
You will be able to make most of your own equipment at lower levels, saving a lot of money when it is hardest to get. Blacksmithing also has the ability to make sharpening stones, weightstones, and grinding stones. Sharpening stones and weightstones are items you can use to increase damage on weapons for a set amount of time. Grinding stones are used by blacksmiths and engineers in crafting. Blacksmiths can also make some trade goods such as rods for Enchanters, and keys to unlock the chests found in the game.
To be a blacksmith, you will need a blacksmithing hammer, and for most recipes you will have to be at a blacksmithing forge. These are found in most cities and towns.
When you get to level 40 and a blacksmithing skill over 200, you can choose to specialize in Weaponsmithing or Armorsmithing. This can be done by talking to trainers in Ironforge and Ogrimmar.
Tailoring
Tailoring is a profession focused on making items out of cloth. Skinning is a great second profession, because as you level many of your recipes will start using leather as well as cloth. It also pairs well with Enchanting. You can enchant and disenchant many of the items you make to level Enchanting faster and cheaper. Tailoring is easy to level, and is in high demand in some markets.
You will be making cloth armor and the all-important bags. I have found the bags to be my best selling items when leveling tailoring. Everyone needs them, and many people do not bother with taking up the craft. To gather materials for tailoring you will need either to buy them from the auction house, or grind humanoid enemies for the drop.
WotLK has added the ability for Tailoring to do Embroidery on their own items to boost damage abilities. Doing this will make the items soulbound, so it is for use on yourself only.
Tailoring is a great profession if you are leveling Mage, Warlock, and Priest. These classes will be able to use the cloth armor you will be making.
