Warhammer 40,000 Tau Army Question?

I just went out after long deliberation and purchased myself a Tau starter army. I was wondering if this is a good starter army or if I need for. Such as a broadside XV88 with twin-linked rail guns (?)Anyway, it consists of a Tau Battleforce, a Firewarrior squad (12 pieces) and a Hammerhead tank (not sure what I’ll equip it with yet). Oh and a codex, still need to get the master rulebook. Any tips would be great. Thanks

As far as value for money goes, the Tau starter army is a reasonable investment. IIRC, your full complement should be two FW squads, a squad of Kroot, three Crisis suits a Devilfish and a Hammerhead. Your first Hammerhead should definitely have the railgun. The flexibility and range of this weapon can be beaten.

Now, if it was me, I’d also invest in one of the Forgeworld crisis suit commander models, because (a) they look far, far cooler than Farsight and (b) they aren’t as, well, rubbish as Shadowsun.

Broadsides are handy fire magnets and give a surprisingly durable, mobile fire support squad, so you certainly shouldn’t dismiss them as a choice, but remember – or, as you’ve not bought the main rulebook yet, *discover* – that the game of 40k is objective-based. Your Fire Warriors and Kroot can seize objectives, but only if they can get there. Fire Warriors are notoriously fragile when they close with an enemy, so objective grabs either need to be early on, with overwhelming firepower then used to prevent a counter-strike, or late in the game, leaving the enemy insufficient time to grab it back.

What this means is that you have a desperate need for mobility, represented by the Devilfish troop transport.

However, having said all that; before you invest in anything more, you really should buy the core rulebook and get some games under your belt. This will give you more of a feel for your likely opponents, your weak areas and your play-style, all of which will contribute to helping your next-purchase decisions.
