Warhammer Horus

Difference between Warhammer 40K and Warhammer?
What’s the difference? Also do any of those two have any reference to the Horus Herecy or Times of Legends? I’m gonna start reading the books but I’m not sure where to start. And on the website The Black Library, I click Warhammer 40K, and it shows the list of books in order of the latest book written to the oldest. Is that the order I should read them in? From the oldest to the newest or it doesn’t matter since the books are sequels, just each one telling a different story.
Thanks!
The Black Library is an imprint of BL Publishing, the publishing army of Games Workshop Group plc. The Black Library exists to publish fiction based on the intellectual properties of Games Workshop’s range of tabletop strategy games, which include Warhammer Fantasy Battles and Warhammer 40,000.
The former – as the name would imply – is set in a fantasy world occupied by all the familiar tropes: elves, dwarves, men, ogres, trolls etc. It has magic, undead, gods, daemons, dragons and a post-Tolkeinian alignment principle of Order versus Chaos.
Warhammer 40,000 is set in an entirely different universe, not much different from our own but thousands of years in the future (the game’s name comes from the fact that the dateline terminates at about the end of the forty-first millennium). It borrows much from the older Warhammer Fantasy property, including the Order/Chaos dichotomy, and owes a substantial debt to classic fantasy tropes (elf-like Eldar and brutal, alien Orks are familiar antagonists). But instead of magic, it has psychic powers, and the battles involve artillery, tanks, small arms, space ships, mechs (giant, bipedal battle suits) and genetically-enhanced warrior-monks.
The games’ background have evolved organically over the 20-30 years they have existed and so each universe has a vast an extensive back-story. Black Library novels tend to be set in a rough approximation of “the present day” in each universe (give or take a millennium or so). But obviously reader interest in “origin” stories has always been high, which inspire the Horus Heresy and Time of Legends series.
The Horus Heresy is the tale of the brutal origins of the great galactic empire of humanity, the Imperium. A complex politico-religious-military tale, it has so far been told in a number of inter-related (but not all strictly contiguous) novels and shows no sign of coming to a conclusion any time soon. The Time of Legends has just begun as a series, but looks to be a similar project: each book stands more-or-less on its own merits, but reading them in order will help.
The rest of the range tends to be clustered into sets of three or more, but being part of an omnibus won’t guarantee continuity. The Imperial Guard omnibus, for example, contains three entirely unrelated novels, linked only by the fact that they’re all about regiments of the Imperial Guard.
I find that the best way to get into things is to simply find a book you like the sound of any go with that. If it turns out to be in the middle of a series, don’t worry about it. Just enjoy the story and go back and read the others another time.
However, having said that, if you go and join the Black Library forums, you’ll find that there are a couple of threads there that make an attempt to place all the novels from both universes into chronological order.
