What is the best kind of Games Workshop warhammer to collect (40k, LotR, Warhammer)?
When I mean best I mean like cheapest, easiest to play, etc etc etc
It depends on your precise priorities.
Cammie is, of course, right that a free-to-download game like SGII is de facto cheaper than any game you have to buy. But finding players of SGII can be a challenge, and you still have to buy miniatures. The advantage of playing a Games Workshop game is that they are almost ubiquitous, meaning that you will be able to find players of one or all of the range in any decent-sized conurbation in the Western hemisphere (and increasingly in the Eastern, too). Of the Games Workshop range, the cheapest to get into is the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle game, because you can pick up the Rules Manual for under £20 online and the miniatures can also be found on eBay often for no more than a nominal value.
But LOTR is also the least-popular of the Big Three and tends to be favoured by younger players. there are exceptions (I’m getting into LOTR, myself), but that’s the general trend. There is also a question mark hanging over the long-term viability of the game’s support and development given the intricate web of licensing agreements that sustain it.
When it comes to ease of play, if you’re prepared to look outside Games Workshop, then probably the best science fiction game I’ve found for fast-play is AT-43 from French games company, Rackham. Bedevilled in the last 12 months with financial troubles, the company seems to have come out of the storm in reasonable shape and is now getting back up to speed with its delayed releases. AT-43 has a grim feel that should be familiar to any 40k player, with a playable game right out of the box and simple, intuitive rules – it also comes with pre-assembled, pre-painted miniatures for those who are paint-shy. But in the GW stable, then LOTR probably has the edge on ease of play, too. 40k and WFB suffer from many years of legacy issues. LOTR is, in effect, the game that the experienced designers would have liked to have made out of the Warhammer games if it wouldn’t have invalidated too many books and armies for comfort. The re-use of the same basic game engine in the Historical skirmish games, Old West and High Seas, is a good indicator of this.
I should finish by pointing out that GW is not the evil empire and that, if you want to play popular GW games with a low starting-cost that are nevertheless hugely popular then you should go to the Specialist Games section of their website, where you can download the rules for Bloodbowl, Mordheim, Necromunda, Battle of Five Armies, Inquisitor, Epic: Armageddon and Inquisitor entirely for free.
