Top Three Fantasy Monsters
There are certain monsters in the fantasy genre who, as their name suggests, just simply aren’t suited to being the good guys (usually, anyway). Some of the bigger fantasy monsters can be found in the most unlikely of places, and have for some time have rampaged their way beyond more traditional literature (such as Tolkien and tabletop roleplaying games) to films and video games too; I bet an upcoming 3DS or Kinect game will have them pop up at some point. If you can’t wait for the time when your shiny new Nintendo 3DS requires the yelling of “WAAAGH” in game (or the other way around) then do see below; being green has never been easier.
Trolls
In Norse mythology trolls were originally evil giants, eventually becoming creatures in their own right thanks to Scandinavian folklore. Dwelling in isolated places such as caves and mountains (or bridges, if they take their fancy), trolls are generally dumb but large, strong and sometimes strangely agile. They are incredibly tough (with stone skin or regenerative powers, particularly in Dungeons & Dragons), trolls usually have an unfortunate reputation for eating human flesh (or indeed any; they’re not really that picky). Ogres, who are generally large, greedy and hairy, are often depicted in a similar way to trolls.
Orcs
Big, green and almost always mean. Orcs are generally powerful warriors who enjoy fighting. Tolkien first began using this name for them, apparently desiring to ultimately change the spelling to “ork” (which you may have seen in Warhammer). In both World of Warcraft and Dungeons & Dragons the players can be an orc themselves. Goblins are often seen as essentially smaller, weaker, more mischievous orcs.
Kobolds
A spirit from Germanic mythology, in modern media kobolds are small weak monsters somewhere between a human and a dragon. In Dungeons & Dragons they tend to populate only low level dungeons, generally making them a running joke among the community.
