For Warhammer 40K, do metal models need priming before painting?
I just bought a Daemon Prince of Nurgle. I have arleady assembled him. Should I prime this metal model with my Chaos Black primer first, or should I start painting on the metal directly?
Absolutely yes, use a primer. Whether you use Chaos Black or Skull White is up to you. Many model painters are moving towards using a grey spray undercoat that isn’t sold by Games Workshop (yet). Tamiya and Testors both make grey spray undercoats, but others simply use car body spray with no problems (matte, obviously).
The purpose of a primer depends on the colour you use. First and foremost, it provides a smooth, stable canvas on which to apply your paint. Acrylic paints will go over bare metal, but will require more coats and will apply less smoothly than if painted onto an undercoat.
In addition, it offers the first line of defence for your model against chipping and flanking. It won’t save it from a drop ont he floor, but it will prevent it from taking damage from normal daily handling – although an additional layer of matte varnish (Testor’s dullcoat is universally recognized as the best on the market) is strongly advised once painting is finished.
If you use a white undercoat, you’ll find that bright colours stand out more strongly and the model’s detail and qualities are enhanced. White undercoats are best for models that you expect to take a lot of time on – not least, because you have to paint every last crevice or have a model with lots of annoying little white bits sticking out at you!
A black undercoat is best for better models painted and on the tabletop quickly. However, it can obscure details and make applying colour a time-consuming activity, as pigments like yellow and red will often take multiple coats to stand out (check out the new Foundation Paint range from GW – almost universally recognized as the new standard setter in acrylic model paints, this was specially formulated to be applied directly onto black undercoats).
A grey undercoat sits between these two extremes, and has the flaws and advantages of both, but all to a lesser degree. I recommedn grey undercoats for vehicles and other models where large blocks of a single colour are expected to be applied.
