In Warhammer 40k, can the Dark Eldar ever summon daemons?

In Warhammer 40k, can the Dark Eldar ever summon daemons? A friend of mine is already playing Chaos Marines, so I want to do a different army, but I still want to be able to use some of the daemons. Is this possible? I want to find out before buying the codex and all that junk.

Yes and no.

If we’re speaking about strictly rules-legal Warhammer 40k, then the Dark Eldar can’t include daemons in their forces *as* daemons.

However, the relationship between the Dark Eldar and the Warp powers is complicated and it’s impossible to say what strange and complex pacts and oaths are sworn in the halls of Commorragh to stave off the predations of She Who Thirsts.

The Dark Eldar army list, of course, includes the Warp Beasts which are, essentially, daemons: creatures born of the Warp and bound to this dimension with terrible rites and vile tortures in the twisted flesh of the victims of the haemonculi. So if you wanted to replace your Warp Beasts with miniatures from the Daemons of Chaos range, that should be fine. Of course, you will need to bear in mind that Warp Beasts are beasts – in the technical, rules-sense of the word – and normally mounted on cavalry bases so you should ensure that any daemonic inclusions conform to the same standards. So Chaos Hounds, Beasts of Slaanesh, Seekers of Slaanesh without their riders, Flesh Hounds or similar would be easy fits. Alternatively, you could simply mount other daemons on cavalry bases; but try to sustain the essential “bestial” nature of the miniature to obey the spirit of the rules.

Of course, in friendly games and Apocalypse matches, all bets are off and you can do what you please. A Dark Eldar cabal that has fallen into the clutches of She Who Thirsts and which marches to battle alongside a horde of rampaging daemons would look fantastic (and be a horrible opponent to face in close combat, besides!).
