Warhammer 40k Codex

When the Space Wolves Attack
The Warhammer 40K universe is one full of legendary warriors. The space marines are a hardy group of advanced infantry soldiers fighting for the Imperium of Man in battles across the ages. Any space marine would make a fearsome enemy, and would be a tough battle for almost any foe. However, one group of space marines stands out among the rest. The Space Wolves are a special faction of marines, with their own customs and organization. The Imperium certainly isn’t fond of their irreverence for authority, but this irritation is outweighed by the sheer ferocity in battle displayed by the Space Wolves.
The Space Wolves grew out of the leadership of Leman Russ. Russ was raised in the wilderness of his home world Fenris by a pack of wolves. Eventually he was discovered by a hunting party and brought to the king of that planet. The king realized the enormous talent he had on his hands and trained him to be a mighty warrior. After inheriting the leadership of the planet, Russ’ exploits were noticed by the Emperor of Man. After a drinking contest and a fist fight, the Emperor realized that Russ had to be a Primarch. Russ and his warriors were thus officially brought into the Imperium as a faction of space marines.
The Space Wolves draw much more than their name from Leman Russ’ upbringing on his home planet. Much of their ferocity can be attributed to the genetic alteration they are required to undergo during their brutal training. Each trainee is given a part of Leman Russ’ DNA, imbuing each of them with his wolf-like spirit and tenacity. They also receive additional body enhancements which actually have the effect of partially turning the soldier into a werewolf. As might be expected, it is impossible to get such a vicious and fearsome cadre of soldiers to precisely follow military drill and procedure. The Space Wolves have their own ranking system and organizational structure.
The single leader of the Space Wolves is known as the Great Wolf. From there, breaking from Imperium regulation, they are divided into twelve “great companies.” Each company contains a mixture of soldiers, including Blood Claws, Grey Hunters, and Long Fangs. The Space Wolves’ disrespect for authority has been known to get them in trouble with the Imperium from time to time. However, their irreverence is only matched by their ferocity, and they are indeed the Imperium of Man’s greatest asset in battle.
