Poker Tournament Strategy 101 – The Basics of the Game
Poker is a great and exciting game. It appeals to the adventurous, the fun-loving, the risk takers and the thinkers. The game has the right element and the right mixture of luck, skill and a lot of psychological warfare. You would see what kind of person a poker player is just by the poker tournament strategy he employs.
First of all, what you need to know is that poker is a very popular card game. It is the combination of both the elements of chance and strategy that makes the game so exciting to play and even to watch. You can count the number of ways and varieties of poker styles that are out there. For that number, there is one shared objective which a poker game has and that is to present the highest possible hand of cards at a table. In poker, a hand is the total value of five cards which can either be held by a player or it can also be drawn partly from a number of community cards shared at a table. A player will bet on their hands in a particular number of rounds as cards are drawn. A player has to use various skills including math and intuition strategies which are used to get the better of the competition. There are various poker tournament strategy employed by great poker players. It is these poker tournament strategies that make millionaires and legends of the game and separates them from the rest.
There are so many various forms and different dynamics to a poker strategy. This makes discussing it a very lengthy and complex topic. So we will just attempt to introduce to you the basic and simple concepts which we feel you will still be able to use to your advantage.
Many of you should be able to understand an old but very effective concept called Fundamental Theorem of Poker which was introduced by poker player David Sklansky. In this theorem, David Sklansky said that for each time you play your hand the way you would if you were able to peek at your competitors cards, you are gaining something. On the other hand, if every time your competitor plays their cards differently from the process they play them if they were to peek at your hand, you are also gaining an advantage.
An example of this concept is bluffing and slow playing. There would be times when you can use deception as a way to make your competing players play differently than they should had they seen your cards. Of course, there are exceptions to this founding concept, especially in multi way pot situations.
