Open Up The Night Sky For Your Child With A Beginner Telescope
Astronomy can be a life long pursuit. Many people get involved with it when they are very young. Astronomy for kids is a thought provoking pursuit that can teach them about the sciences in general. This is why selecting the right child telescope is so important. If its too complex to operate for your youngster they will become frustrated and become bored with the hobby – so choose wisely!
Kids naturally gravitate to many aspects of astronomy. Movies like Star Wars only serve to increase this attraction.
The Moon
The Earth’s closest neighbor is the moon. It orbits our planet once every 27.3 days. Being so near, it has hosted the only human footsteps on a space object other than the Earth. One of the important benefits of our relationship with the moon is the tides it causes. It’s one of the first objects that can spark a kid’s interest in astronomy, especially with one of the telescopes for kids, because it can be clearly seen with the human eye.
The Sun
Consider Sol, our own star, the sun. Earth is quite far from the sun. The distance varies between about 146 million kilometers and 152 million kilometers. It’s not an inaccurate measurement, it’s because the Earth orbits in an uneven ellipse. Life on Earth is only possible because of the sun. The sun provides both light and heat to the planet. Most people don’t realize that the sun accounts for around 98% of all the mass in the solar system. Talk about the big bully on the block.
The Milky Way Galaxy
Our sun and solar system reside in a galaxy called the Milky Way. Just as other galaxies, ours contains gas and clouds of dust, stars and planets and other space materials. But most of the galaxy is empty nothingness. That’s a lot of nothing because our galaxy is 100,000 light years across and 3,000 light years deep. We’re somewhere in the neighborhood of 30,000 light years from galactic central core. The nothingness is broken up by over 100 billion stars. In fact the galaxy takes its name from the appearance of the band of stars that shine from the main section of the galaxy. It looks like a pool of liquid, thus the name “Milky Way.” Our galaxy is called a spiral galaxy as opposed to the other three main types which are elliptical, lenticular and irregular.
There is a lot of information about astronomy for kids and beginner telescopes on the Internet. Kids could spend hours wrapped in detailed 3D representations of the universe around us.
