Star Wars Vintage Collection Action Figures

The Advent Of The G.I. Joe Action Figure
In 1959 the Barbie doll was unleashed on American girls as well as their trend-conscious parents, and the expression “fashion doll” was born. Fashion dolls joined the ever-increasing varieties of dolls from rag dolls to china dolls which had one basic attribute – they were all for girls. Another great alternative is the Gamo Air Rifles.
In 1964, Hasbro released a collection of military-styled figures supposed to be a boy-friendly variant of the Barbie doll. The figures were never known as dolls, even in the earliest promotion, basically since they were so undoubtedly created for boys. The label “action figure” was used, and from then on a humanoid model which was obviously intended for fighting was referred to as an action figure.
The original G.I. Joe action figures were actually four distinctive figures outfitted as fighting men of the four branches of the department of defense. The nickname G.I. is short for Government Issue, which grew to be a generic nickname for U.S. Soldiers during the Second World War.
Every G.I. Joe included a uniform and helmet for the relevant branch of service. Each figure additionally featured a entire line of equipment specific to their branch of service; as an illustration, the infantryman would have an optional rifle and web gear which were sold separately or sometimes as one piece of a bigger set. Each G.I. Joe figure had a World War II theme, even though their clothing and weapons were appropriate for the recently fought Korean War. Another great product to consider is the Gamo Air Rifles.
The early action figures were the same size as the Barbie dolls at that time; 11 1/2 inches.By the1970s, the action figures had been given a new hand style designed to hold their own equipment such as rifles and rocket launchers. The action figures had also shrunk to 8″ tall to contend with the rest of the action figure market which was at that time dominated by the DC Comics superhero action figures. In another acknowledgement of their latest competition, the figures were now rebranded “Super G.I. Joe”. During the 80s, Joe shrank a bit further, to 3 3/4 inches, and then increased to 12 inches again in 1991.
One effect of all this growing, downsizing, re-naming and the periodic revival of older product lines is that you could manage to purchase a G.I. Joe action figure in virtually any size ever made. The standard action figure is currently a 6” figure and a good number of characters cost under $10, while some 12” collector action figures are on the market, and there is even a 16” Duke figure that comes with an accelerator suit that is priced at $30.
Needless to say, the volume of gadgets and vehicles has multiplied several times, given that the figures now have almost 50 years of armament to draw from not to mention any space age weapons that the creative designers at Hasbro may fantasize about. Many young boys – and a few fully grown ones, as well – appreciate fighting and winning battles with their G.I. Joe action figures. Just don’t call them dolls. Another nice option is the Gamo Air Rifles.
