Is the Clone Wars movie worth going to see?

I really like Star Wars, but I’m not one of the “fanatical” fans. In other words, I love the movies, play some of the video games, etc. I saw a poster for an animated movie this weekend. Is this something that’s worth going to see? Is it meant mainly for kids? (I remember when I was growing up that there were some TV movies made that were targeted to kids.)

It depends … do you wonder what happened during the Clone Wars? If you think that story has already been told then this movie wouldn’t really have anything for you. The stuff that came out for kids in the mid 80s was junk and damned near killed the Star Wars saga. Some would say good because all the new stuff sucked. Not to be a jerk but that is very narrow minded thinking and most people who don’t like the new stuff just don’t get the story. Either that or the story that was made wasn’t what they thought it should be so they don’t like it. Truth is when compared to what Lucas started with as the story of Star Wars and what we have ended up with as the story of Star Wars is very different … but that’s what we have and if you don’t like it fine, that’s your choice but to all the “haters” out there … at least say WHY you don’t like it … no … “It sucked” isn’t a reason.

Another thing that most people don’t see with this movie is that it is only the beginning of a bigger story and in truth was an after thought by the team at LucasFilm Animation. This movie is the “kick off” to a new animated series that will debut this fall on the Cartoon Network. When they were getting ready to tell us about the new series someone said hey, what do you think about kicking it off with a movie. Seemed like a great idea so they went with it. I saw the movie and was impressed and a little bored at times but since I knew it was just the start of something much bigger I was able to let it slide. Of course the series better “rock” or it could get “messy” … lol … I think if more people knew this they wouldn’t be ripping the movie so bad. It’s NOT supposed to be one complete story … it’s the beginning of a much bigger story. In truth this movie only covers 3 or 4 days of the story in “real time” … that’s it. No story could be told in 4 days thus the wrong impression of what the movie’s main goal is.

In the end I guess I would have to say that this movie and the series coming up are more for the super geek fans like me who want to know more about the story and how things happened. For casual fans … you might like it you might not … I’ve seen it 2 times so far, really doubt there will be a “third” time until it’s out on DVD but, and read the book and it’s a excellent kick off for the series.

As for the animation … clearly some like it and some don’t. It IS, however, the path animation will take in the future. If you liked the last Avatar series then you will like the animation in the movie and series because Lucas snapped up Dave Feloni to head the new animation branch of LucasFilm. He has been thought of as one of the leaders in new style animation for a few years now.

As always it comes down to that pesky “certain point of view” thing. I you’ve got some free time see it … it might surprise you but then again it might make you agree more with some of the naysayers you have here. You won’t know until you see it.
