Star Wars Empire Strikes Back Book

Star Wars merchandise -How Geroge Lucas created an empire
This bank holiday was apparently ‘national star wars day’- everybody get ready with the ‘may the forth be with you -hahaha. Mention of Star Wars made me think about the huge amounts of toys, books, cds and other gear that has come out other the years alongside the movie. If it can be sold it has had the star wars logo on it -Bubble bath, posters, toys etc- but maybe thats the brilliance of George Lucas right there.
Star Wars was the first film to think about using the potential of merchandising the film- and it worked more than anyone wouldve thought it wouldve. Lucas’s contract stated that he got the rights to produced merchandise on the movie, which with merchandise for films not being the big business it is now -Fox were to fussed- Was that a mistake? No-one knew how big the films were going to be, Fox didnt know how much money the films were going to make -But George Lucas clearly knew how to market the movie. Taking the merchandising rights allowed him to produced what he wanted to help sell the movie -and when Star wars mania hit the world, he just couldnt keep up with the demand for the promotional merchandise. This demand also helped convince the banks to help fund Lucas for the second Star wars movie and put more money into his company LucasFilm.
Star Wars not only changed filmaking in Holywood, but also the way movies are were marketed. Ever since there have been art books, action figures, t-shirts and many more items of branded merchandise. The studios wouldnt ignore the huge amounts of money that was coming in from merchandise revenues -but then who would ignore that? It equals to more money coming in from the movie and much more publicity. Its works as well, because almost all of us have some piece of movie merchandise, even if its just a small piece -a poster, a t-shirt etc. George Lucas saw the potential in this and ran with it for his tiny sci fi movie -and it paid off big time.
