Why Chess Sets Are Important

The game of chess is one that has been played for many thousands of years. With that said, chess has also undergone several different incarnations, with just a few new rules coming into play at the same time. One example of this is that in the last century, “in passing” or “en passant” was introduced as a rule; because of this, the game’s shape has changed. We’re not here to talk about the rules at this point, though, and instead are going to talk about sets today.

With many different chess sets, some are thought of as better than other sets. When it comes to chess sets, there are a few things to consider; let’s take a look at some of those things, below:

Square Contrast: The type of squares on the board can have a massive effect on your game. Believe it or not they will directly effect your ability to see the board and react to the moves of your opponents. Most professional chess players opt for standard black and white boards, specifically because of this.

One of the things you’ll need to consider is “piece weight;” piece weight has three different measurements that you’ll need to take into account, and they are single, double, and triple weight. Many will say that piece weight does not affect the outcome of the game, but when you consider that most of the game is psychological, the sound of the pieces hitting the board can have a serious effect on your opponent.

Board Type: You can use virtually any piece set you want, but for the most part you will want a heavy board either made of wood or metal. You can often use a marble board if you so desire, but these are typically reserved for outdoor matches.

When you buy a chess set, it should be noted that you’ll often receive pieces to go with it. That’s not true of cheaper sets you can buy retail, though, and you should actually avoid purchasing these if at all possible. Unless you can only truly afford a cheap cardboard chessboard with plastic pieces, you should invest in something more substantial. Do consider investing in something more expensive and of higher quality if you can do so, especially if you consider yourself serious in the pursuit of chess expertise.

That said, one of the best boards you can purchase is the tournament set. Most tournament sets are standard, with one set of single weight pieces. It’s a pretty simple matter to have your set upgraded to triple weight, and you can have your set built online to your specifications before it’s sent to you, with triple weight pieces included at your request.

Typically, your board will be made of flexible vinyl that you can roll out and store in a bag made of canvas. This bag is made to hold everything you need for chess, including your board, pieces, clock, and any books or other materials related to chess. As you can see, many things should be taken into consideration when you are purchasing your chess set.

For a good “display” board, one made of marble or rosewood is a fine option. Outdoor chess is the pursuit of many chess players, and to fill the need, some companies make chess sets that are “human sized.” Much of the time, companies make these sets to be weatherproof and to have various weights. You have lots to choose from, so whatever you do choose, make sure it’s going to fit you and will be something that you can use for many years. Although chess is “just a game,” it’s truly a great game, perhaps the best ever to come into existence.
