Cheap Key Chains Take Us Back To a Happier Time

Everyone has some small part of them that longs to be a kid again. It takes us back to an easier time when the world was full of hope, magic, and wonder. It was a time when the only thing we really needed to make us happy was our imagination, and enough time and space to really play. To capture this nostalgic sentiment, several large companies have started releasing cheap key chains as a reminder of our childhood, often with depictions of Star Wars characters or Lego’s. They are proving that sometimes, to recapture a sense of what is lost, we do not need to spend enormous amounts of money or spend large amounts of time, but rather all we need to do is to pick up a key chain and once again give our imagination license to run wild.

This has been a growing trend of certain subcultures that dates back to Generation X. It is a fascination with kitsch, with camp, with the basic pleasures of a younger time. There are products that capture whatever subset of children you belonged to, forever, in affordable trinkets like toys and key chains. From lunchboxes to magnetic decals that can be placed on our cars, we are again transported to hours spent in play, watching television, or enjoying movies. It is not a culture of materialism but instead an iconic representation, such that merely looking at a collection of key rings can trigger a rush of innocent memories that are wrapped forever around these tiny representations of our youth.

Adult life can be needlessly and painfully complex. It drains our energy and exhausts our patience. We spend huge amounts of money on psychological intervention, on marriage counseling, on group therapy, and anti-depressants, all in the name of the pursuit of happiness, when that happiness sometimes is no more elusive than picking up cheap key chains at a gas station. It has the same power as a photograph to bring back the smells of overflowing toy boxes that were never organized, or games devised on snow days when school was cancelled. Often the answer is not to add more chemicals to our bodies, but instead to feed that happy child that could be amused for endless hours with naught but a trinket or ornament for company.

Too often our imaginations these days are strained with worries about illness, dying alone, divorce, economic woes, personal tragedies, the weight of aging, the degradation of our physical bodies. Those imaginations were once powerful forces for good, things that lent us awe and wonderment. We were once rulers of tree houses, and concerned only with tying the zip line over the swimming hole. Instead of trying to fill our lives with more meaning, perhaps we should look to filling our minds again with simple joys. Exciting oneself with a ring of keys and cheap key chains to hold them together, fueled not by big-budget special effects, but the bountiful cornucopia of our fruitful imagination is fun.
