What is the purpose of the ‘visor’ LaForge wears in StarTrek?

I’ve always been wondering…what is the purpose of the ‘visor thing’ LaForge wears in teh Star Trek series?

Geordie LaForge is blind. The VISOR connects to his brain through two connectors on his temples, and allows him to “see”. It can, however, see much more than visible light. It allows him to examine his environment in a wide range of wavelengths, including infrared and UV, and can even allow him to analyze the composition of many materials.

Starting with the movie Star Trek: First Contact, LaForge no longer has the VISOR – it has been replaced with ocular implants directly in his eyes we got a preview of this in the final TNG episode, “All Good Things” for the scenes that occur when Picard finds himself in the future.
