Go Where No Man Has Gone Before In A Star Trek Costume
Of all the science fiction TV programs, Star Trek has a special place in my heart. What fantastic and memorable characters there were such as Captain Kirk and the Vulcan Spock. I was enthralled by their adventures to go where no man has gone before, exploring new planets and encountering amazing and strange creatures like the Borgs, Klingons and Tribbles. When I have a fancy dress event, my first thought is to pick a character from Star Trek to dress up as.
There have been five television series and numerous Star Trek films made since the 1960′s, including the most recent movie, Star Trek (2009), about the early years of the Star Trek crew. If you want to know the rank of anyone aboard the Enterprise, you only have to look at their uniform which tells all. The command crew can be recognized by their gold colored tunic. Captain James T. Kirk looked rather dashing in this gold shirt with the captain’s rank insignia on the front, black pants and boots don’t you think? The command officers’ shirts are gold in the 2009 movie but have the new addition of a Starfleet emblem woven into the fabric.
Are you a fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation with Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard? I never got into it personally. If you watched it, you may have noticed that the color of the tunics changed from what it was in the original TV series. The commanding officers are wearing red and the yellow/gold tunics signify the operations and engineering crew.
If you favorite Star Trek character was the half-human, half-vulcan Mr Spock then you might want to live long and prosper in the first officer’s blue costume. Mr Spock was easily the most memorable looking crew member with his pointy ears, upswept eyebrows and unique hairstyle. If you wear the Spock costume, don’t forget the Vulcan “live long and prosper” salute. You do this by raising your hand, palm forward and part you fingers between the middle and ring finger with the thumb extended. Leonard Nimoy came up with the salute. It’s based upon a hand sign used by Jewish Rabbis.
If you’re a woman, you may be a fan of Nichelle Nichols who played Lieutenant Nyota Uhura in the original series. Did you know that she was one of the first major black characters in an American TV series? Did you know that the name Nyota Uhura comes from the Swahili language. “Nyota” means star and “Uhura” means freedom. She wore a rather sexy and short red dress with black boots and not forgetting the large hoop earrings.
