The DW Series & DW Audios Series: The History
Pretty much everyone in countries such as the UK, USA, Canada, New Zeeland and Australia etcetera should have at the very least heard of the world famous Sci-Fi series Doctor Who by the BBC! Thanks to the rebirth of the serial in 05 after a 15 year pause, Doctor Who is as popular as ever with shows being shown on the international Science fiction channel and even on American television channels as well as the BBC’s transmissions.
Thanks to the new series Dr. Who is currently officially the longest running Sci-Fi serial ever with the first episode transmitted by the BBC on November the 23rd 1963, an episode in which the Doctor and his companions journeyed back one hundred thousand years into Earth’s past to help some somewhat dim cavemen so that they could discover fire.
During the seventies the BBC expanded DW onto the audio median creating the 1st Doctor Who Audio. When it all started the BBC solely produced soundtracks from the original serial & then had the Doctors of the time add some binding narration for completion. It wasn’t long before the BBC decided to take the audio releases to the next level by releasing audio book stories solely for Audiobook release.
Also the DW Audiobook family was expanded with the release of Audios from episodes that had exclusively appeared on the radio. Another brilliant use the BBC have found for audio with Dr. Who is the re-creation of old stories that had been lost. At the time of writing the BBC’s Audio Book collection currently consists of over 50 titles. The range spans all the way though the first Doctor right up until the present Dr, David Tennant. Also Torchwood Audiobooks and Sarah Jane Audiobooks have also been added in recent times.
One of the cool things about DW Audiobooks is that they provide us the freedom to listen to our favorite shows anywhere we want with the use of the modern mp3 player. With multitasking becoming more and more an important part of our lives it’s not surprising that Audio Book sales for both Dr. Who and in general have increased. Also an important factor about audio titles is that they are in many cases narrated by their original actors, which really adds to the whole experience.
With the Doctor Who New show going from strength to strength and more and more Audiobooks being created available both from the old and new serial and now from Torchwood & The Sarah Jane Adventures as well, it looks like DW & Doctor Who Audios are here to stay for some time to come!
