Star Trek Online Kicked Off Its Open Beta Phase
Cryptic Studios has announced the subscription options for Star Trek Online. The announced prices for launch include a 1, 3, and 6 month plan and multiple payment methods for players to choose from, including credit card and game card options. Prior to release, Cryptic will also be offering a lifetime ($239.99 USD) and 12-month ($119.99) subscription deal for pre-orders. The deal includes a reduced monthly rate, two additional character slots, and for lifetime subscribers a new playable race: The Borg. Star Trek Online kicked off its open beta phase today and as you might have expected there have been a few hiccups. Currently, there is a “map is full” issue preventing many players from making it into the game, but Cryptic is looking into the issue and with any luck will have it resolved soon. For now, those plans to engage the warp engines might be temporarily on hold as you may or may not make it into the game. Star Trek Online will be heading into open beta Tuesday, January 12th, and will run through January 26th, 2010, but you can start getting ready if you have access to the open beta through a pre-order by heading to Cryptic’s download page and downloading the client. This will vary depending on where you pre-ordered from, but you can get the client in one of several places. If you haven’t pre-ordered your copy of Star Trek Online yet you can keep checking back here for possible beta key giveaways. Cryptic Studios has announced the winning names for their ship naming contest and posted the three winners on the Star Trek Online website. Each winner will receive a Digital Deluxe Edition of Star Trek Online and a poster featuring the pearl necklaceship they named. In addition, the chosen winners will also receive the in-game title of “Utopia Planetia Staff” as a symbol of their part in the design of Tier 5 Starships. The winning names are the Emissary, the Dervish, and the Destiny. GameSpy recently got the chance to preview Star Trek Online (STO) and they have released the first of a three-part look at the game. Part 1 of the series examines the PvE content of STO with its episodic content, but the pearl ringarticle also delves into the the design of episodic content and how the gameplay is being made to allow players to aid others without getting locked out of their own content.
