Babylon 5, would you recommend it

I’m a sci-fi fan, but I never had the time or inclination to watch every programme set in space. Recently though, I bought the whole of Farscape on DVD – I thought it was fab, it’s funny, romantic and a touch absurd – like me!

Absolutely. Babylon 5 is one of the best. Admittedly, the budget was small and it did show sometimes, but the writing was what made it special. The first season starts out slowly, so it helps to be patient. Once it gets rolling it just doesn’t stop. It’s one of those shows where you get to the end and realize how many clues were planted along the way, and then you go back and watch it again with new eyes.

You might give the new Battlestar Galactica a shot. I’ve also heard good things about Kyle XY, although I haven’t seen it. And if you liked Wonderfalls, try Pushing Daisies (new), or Northern Exposure (several years old). You might also like Tru Calling, Jeremiah, Jericho and Joan of Arcadia (I just noticed how many start with ‘j’, go figure). None of them made it more than two seasons, but they were fun. If you don’t mind older shows, like 10+ years old, check out Xena/Hercules, Highlander, The Pretender, Profiler, Quantum Leap, and Forever Knight. There’s also Earth 2 and Space: Above and Beyond – IMO they’re mediocre, but they had a devoted following. Same goes for The Dead Zone and 4400. Oh, and The X-Files is a classic. Same for the new version of The Outer Limits, although I’m not sure if the whole series is available just yet. And there’s also Alias, which is pretty cool.

PS – Someone below me suggests renting the movies. Don’t rent In The Beginning . It’s a prequel in the sense that it takes place before the series, but it was shot at the end. It gives away many of the surprises from the show and will spoil it. Don’t watch it until you’ve finished the series, or at least until the end of Season 4.
