Star Trek Costumes – How To Put Yours Together
Fans of all ages are intrigued to wear Star Trek costumes. There are so many shows as well as movies now, you have lots of options. No matter if you are just looking for something to wear to a party or you are an avid Trekkie on the way to a convention, you can find the right costume.
It is probably best to first decide which Star Trek you want to represent. Are you a fan of the original series? Or do you prefer The Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager or Enterprise? Or would you prefer a character and outfit from one of the movies instead?
Obviously, whichever you prefer is going to affect what costume you wear, in more ways than just the style of uniform. In the first series, for example, no one liked the Klingons. In later years, the Klingons worked along with the Federation. The make-up used for them changed quite a bit as well.
Your choice is also going to depend on your budget. If you are willing to spend the money, you can purchase your entire costume. If you do, you can be whatever character you can find the clothes, accessories and make-up for. If you do not want to purchase your entire costume, it is probably best to stick with being a Starfleet character and a more human looking character than a Klingon.
A Starfleet uniform is fairly simple in terms of getting together the pants and shirt. You just need to make sure the design and colors are right for your time period. There are plenty of images online to help you there. The simplest types of uniforms are from the first series, of course. If you have the time and ability, you can also find patterns to make your own uniform. You will get the most realistic looking costume doing that.
As far as make-up goes, if you do not want to be human, you can easily make or buy prosthetic ears to be a Vulcan or put on a small amount of make-up to be Bajoran, for example. Just remember, the more elaborate the make-up needed, the more expensive it will be and the harder to get it right.
To help with an authentic look, the place to spend a little extra money is in accessories. For example, you can buy the right communicator, weapons or badges to fit your particular character. Even if your uniform is not exact, the right phaser is going to more than make up for that.
If you have a favorite episode or scene in a movie, you might be able to find a prop that will fit as well. Fans of the first series could make their own tribbles, for example. Little touches like this will really make your costume special.
Star Trek costumes are a perfect choice for any science fiction fan. Take the time to come up with some prop ideas and make or find the outfit you want. With the right couple of accessories, you will look like you graduated from the Academy.
