Lord Of The Rings Miniatures

What are the best miniatures (similar to warhammer) to paint?
Okay, let me first admit that I have miniatures from ALL of games workshop’s 3 games lol… I enjoyed painting the warhammer 40k the most and was wondering if there were any other similar lines of miniatures that were available to paint. I live in Manitoba Canada so prefereably something available in Canada please
Personally I DO enjoy the high details in the models and was wondering if there were any other sci-fi or even lord of the ring-similar mini’s out there that were also detailed.
There are literally dozens, if not hundreds, of companies making detailed sci-fi and fantasy miniatures. Some come close to or even exceed Games Workshop in terms of details and quality (especially as some of GW’s output is patchy to say the least!).
If you’re in Canada, then check out MiniWargaming in Ontario. They have excellent customer support, although their miniature range is currently a bit limited (they do Privateer Press stuff and Flames of War, besides GW).
Another great site for discovering great new minis is CoolMiniOrNot. Its a gallery site that let’s you view and rate other people’s painted miniatures, but also has a shop selling minis from dozens of ranges from around the world, from Andrea to Wyrd. So you can browse the galleries, spot a mini you like and go straight to the CMON store to track it down and buy one for yourself. They’re based in the US so postage to Canada should at least be less crippling than it is to us in the UK.
Speaking of the UK, do check out the ranges from Hasslefree Miniatures and Heresy Miniatures (both available at CMON, but they also have their own website). And if you like finely-crafted sculpting, you should also look at Avatars of War by Felix Panagua and Freebooter Miniatures from Werner Klocke (again, at CMON).

The Frodo Franchise: The Lord of the Rings and Modern Hollywood $9.64 “This is the best all-around view of the Tolkien phenomenon. Thompson understands the books, she understands the movies–she also understands the money and the franchising. Best of all, she understands the people. Thompson offers cultural criticism of the highest order, examining one of the most significant shifts in contemporary popular media.”–Tom Shippey, author of The Road to Middle-earth”Reading these chapters has been an absolute pleasure. It’s all so complex but so succinct. Thompson has managed to do what so many others have failed to do . . . in chapter one, she has explained how all the rights to LOTR bounced around, and were finally sorted so Peter Jackson could make the movie. I’ve never understood the complexities of how that worked until now!”–Judy Alley, Merchandising Coordinator, The Lord of the Rings”I must say that Thompson has written the definitive study of Peter Jackson’s work in creating this remarkable production entity.”–Alex Funke, ASC, Oscar-winning Visual Effects Director of Photography, miniatures unit, The Lord of the Rings”I had a wonderful time reading those chapters! There’s so much I don’t know about what went on–I am in awe of all the research Thompson has done. It is an extremely interesting read! There’s so much there that I’d forgotten and I always wished there was a permanent record of many things that happened. Thompson’s account of TORN’s beginnings and how it functioned gets it absolutely right–more than that, Thompson captures how it felt to us at the time. Nobody else has managed to get enough of an understanding to do that.”–Erica Challis (“Tehanu”), co-founder of TheOneRing.net |
