lord of the rings journal
explain these lord of the ring quotes (Fellowship)?

here they are, explain each one. I have to do a bunch of diolectical journals for school and need help. I will choose best answer for whoever explains them the best and what they actually mean.-

It’s the job that’s never started as takes longest to finish, as my old gaffer used to say.

Despair is only for those who see the end beyond all doubt. We do not.

It is perilous to study too deeply the arts of the Enemy, for good or for ill. But such falls and betrayals, alas, have happened before.

In nothing is the power of the Dark Lord more clearly shown than in the estrangement that divides all those who still oppose him.

Gaffer is Hamfast Gamgee, Sam’s father. The first quote is just Sam’s way of saying that procrastination affects those who contemplate hard work, because it will take a long time to finish. This might be Tolkien’s way of showing that the hobbits are less ambitious and industrious than the other races of the West. They prefer to avoid the action and the adventure that men seek.

The second quote is by Gandalf. It’s another way of saying “It’s not over til the fat lady sings.” In other words, unless you can see the future (and know for certain there is no way out), there is always a reason to hope for the best.

The third quote is by Elrond. I would interpret it as a variation of Nietszche’s quote “”He who fights monsters must take care lest he become a monster. When you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss gazes into you.” Elrond is saying some of the council who tried to learn about Sauron’s power fell under his spell.

Last quote – is by an elf named Haldir. He is saying that the power of the enemy is the power to “divide and conquer” by sowing discontent and confusion among the allies. If they could unite to face Sauron they would have a better chance of winning.

Focusing on Napoleons last six yearsfrom initial shipboard captivity with the Royal Navy to his death in exile on St. Helena in 1821historian Frank Giles creates an authentic portrait of the fallen emperor. Napoleon labored to obfuscate his tyranny in France with a legend of him as the architect of a free Europe, while his jailer, Lord Lowe, has been reviled by contemporary critics and historians. In this new paperback edition, with eight pages of photographs, Giles presents a new and balanced view of Lowe and Napoleon, both condemned to a tiny Atlantic island for six years. Will spark controversy about Napoleons life and death on St. Helena.History Today What makes this study worth reading … is the fascinating variety of contradictory opinions about Napoleon.Library Journal A lively, readable acount, and its revisionist view rings true.Kirkus Review [A] judicious and well-researched contribution to this debate.Sunday Telegraph
