What’s the relationship between Smeagol and Gollum in Lord of the Rings?

Smeagol and Gollum are one in the same person. They are two separate identities within the same individual, which is known in psychology as a Dissociative Disorder (more commonly, split-personality disorder). The other person who said Smeagol is a schizophrenic is not correct.

In the case of Smeagol/Gollum, the relationship is one in which the two personalities are opposing one another. Smeagol wishes to return to the self that he once was and obey his Master, Frodo. Gollum, on the other hand, wishes to obtain the One Ring for himself, thus only obeying Frodo until the time to strike is right. Both identities battle for superiority, with Gollum winning in the end.

Because of these two separate and strong desires, a dissociative split has taken place.
