Passive design strategy?
Hi all.
I would like to know how designer positions occupants as a key determinant to achieve the intended performance of passive design, especially in the tropical climate.
For instance, a simple example would be how do we encourage people to use the window or any other opening devices other than air-conditioning unit in a public building?

Passive design is about smart thinking.
If you wanted people to use windows instead of air conditioning, there are 3 very simple methods.
1, fit each air conditioned work area with a coin operated bow, so that whoever wants the conditioning on, has to pay for it directly.
2, turn off the air conditioning at the master switch.
3, do not include an air conditioning in the building design.
All 3 of the above methods would encourage people to open a window, on the principles of saving their own money or because you have not given them an option.
However, a public building is different in that the people using it, are often only passing through or there for a short period of time. And people often do not feel that they are allowed to open windows in an area in public buildings. The easiest ways here, would be to have the staff to open the windows in the first place, and allow for the public to close them, as more people would happily do this if they were cold. The other options, are to either put up signs suggesting people open windows if they need air or fit air vents into the building so that they move the air around without power. It is a very simple thing to do, by having low air vents and high air vents. As the room warms, the warm air rises, it pulls in cooler air from outside, via the lower air vents and the hot air then passes outside through the higher vents.

”Other people’s money”: An empirical examination of the motivational differences between male and female white collar offenders. $49.99 The purpose of this study was to add to the criminological research in the area of white collar crime. In particular, this research was conducted in order to discover what motivates individuals to commit specific white-collar crimes that involve the violation of financial trust (i.e. embezzlement and fraud). Additionally, the specific motivations that “trust violators” use to neutralize the commission of their criminal acts, how these neutralizations are learned and the specific differences between why women and men commit criminal offenses were the primary goals of this project.;The framework for the research was the classic criminological study of trust violators conducted by the late Donald R. Cressey in 1953. Thus, an ancillary aim of this research was to test Cressey’s original hypothesis to see if it is applicable to white collar offenders of today. Additionally, Sykes and Matza’s Techniques of Neutralization Theory was also tested to discover if gender differences exist regarding the neutralization process.;To answer my proposed research questions, a qualitative research design utilizing intensive one to one interviews was used to question male and female white collar offenders who were incarcerated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Based on my sampling strategy, participants were solicited by posting a request for participation in various Federal Prison facilities throughout the eastern United States.;Based on the response to solicitation for participation, a sample of forty inmates—twenty males and twenty females—were interviewed over the course of a six month period.;In regard to the findings, it was discovered that Cressey’s original hypothesis of trust violating behavior is modestly supported by both male and female white collar offenders. Second, overwhelming support was found in the statements of both male and female offenders in regard to Sykes and Matza’s Neutralization Theory.
