Chess Strategy For The Tournament Player

Chess! Starter moves for starters?
I have been a long time fan of the game chess and I tried to compete in a chess tournament when I was in the elementary grades but I never won. I admit that even though I am a big fan, I am a loser in Chess. I would like to ask to those players of chess out there, could you recommend some good starter moves or strategies? Thanks…I mean in the start of the game, what move can you recommend me that would be a nice start…(other than the one moving the pawn on the top of the king…).
Is there a way I can improve my chess playing?
Sometimes if you befriend good players online, they will teach you some things through your games. I have done this with a few beginners and gotten them to an intermediate level. It’s hard to find people who will do this for free. So, the next best thing would be to join a local chess club. It is usually very inexpensive (sometimes only a couple of dollars per month). You will find a lot of people willing to help you and analyze your games.
If you cannot find anyone the best thing to do is study some books and keep playing. Find a book that discusses opening principles and you can build from there. Once you learn the opening principles and some basic mating patterns, you should work on middle and endgame strategy. You can find free lectures at Free Internet Chess Server (FICS).
I suggest learning general principles first and understand the reason for them. It will take you much further than just memorizing opening lines and not really understanding the theory behind the moves. Sooner or later your opponent will not make the book moves you’ve memorized and you will be lost. Try some openings that appeal to you for both black and white. Once you find a couple you like, stick with them for a while. Play lots of games with them and learn the subtle nuances. It’s not realistic to try and go out and learn all the openings.
The main thing is to have FUN! It’s not about winning or losing, but discovering the art of chess. It’s an amazing game with seemingly endless possibilities.
Good luck!

Bobby Fischer’s Games Of Chess $22.23 This is the only book ever written entirely by Bobby Fischer. It is not to be confused with other books with similar names that were written by other authors. Here is the blurb on the original dust jacket, as published in 1959: THERE ARE 34 games in this book. The 13 from the U.S. Championship Tournament of 1957-58 and the prize-winning “Game of the Century” from the Third Rosenwald Trophy Tournament are penetratingly analyzed by Bobby Fischer, whose annotations provide invaluable instructions to the chess player of either average or advanced ability. In addition, this book includes the scores of Bobby Fischer’s 20 games from the 1958 Portoroz Interzonal Tournament in which he played against the world’s elite in chess, among them Tal, Gligorich, Petrosyan, and Bronstein. The games in this book reveal Bobby Fischer’s brilliance in middle and end-game strategy, and also the latest and soundest treatments of popular openings-in particular, the Sicilian and King’s Indian defenses. By playing these games over, the reader will become familiar with the patterns of the latest and soundest lines in chess, and will automatically begin to make stronger moves in his own games. At the age of fifteen, Bobby Fischer was the youngest international grandmaster of all time. He lives in Brooklyn, was a junior at Erasmus Hall High School, and looking forward to the 1959 Candidates’ Tournament, the winner of which challenges Mikhail Botvinnik for the world championship.About the AuthorAt the age of fifteen, Bobby Fischer was the youngest international grandmaster of chess of all time. Chess And Checkers $8.88 Edward Lasker (1885-1981) was a leading American chess and Go player. He was awarded the title of International Master of chess by FIDE. Lasker earned undergraduate degrees at the University of Berlin in mechanical and electrical engineering. He also invented the breast pump, which saved many premature infants’ lives and made Lasker a lot of money. His best result was his narrow 8.5-9.5 loss in a match with Frank Marshall for the U. S. Championship in 1923. For that, Lasker was invited to participate in the legendary New York chess tournament in 1924, facing worldclass masters like Alekhine, Capablanca, Rubinstein, Emanuel Lasker, and Réti. Lasker was also instrumental in developing Go in the USA, and together with Karl Davis Robinson and Lee Hartman founded the American Go Association. Edward Lasker published several books on American checkers, chess, and Go. Among his famous works are: Chess Strategy (1915), Chess and Checkers: The Way to Mastership (1918), Chess for Fun and Chess for Blood (1942), and The Adventure of Chess (1950). |

Reti’s Best Games Of Chess $20.95 Richard Réti (1889-1929) was both a master player and a superb endgame composer. He was also a prominent member of the hyper-modern school and author of two of the greatest chess books ever written, Masters of the Chessboard and Modern Ideas in Chess. His games, which greatly influenced chess strategy, are known for their many innovations, beautifully developed combinations, and important advances in opening play and strategy. There are 70 games in this book, selected from all stages of Réti’s career. Early games show the budding of Réti’s almost phenomenal positional skills and his rise to status of great master with first prize wins at Kaschau and the international tournament of Gothenburg, 1920. There are many games from the tournaments of 1922, during the development of the Réti and the English openings including Réti-Rubinstein 1923, Réti-Becker 1923, Réti – Bogolyubov 1924, and his stunning defeat of Capablanca in 1924. The games from 1925 to his premature death in 1929 show his further development and number among them many which made the chess world sit up and take notice. Fifteen of Réti’s most interesting composed endgames are also included. There is a short memoir and expert annotation by Harry Golombek. For this edition Raymond Keene has written a new Introduction. |
