Chess Strategy For The Club Player

chess strategy for the club player
Have you also noticed some AI trouble in Chessmaster PC game?

I can say I am an average player, about 1600 -1700 (Chessmaster rating after hundreds of games, also former club player at about 1600…).

I’ve spent countless hours, days and nights studying chess: tactics, strategy, the whole shit.

Still, I wonder if anyone has also noticed the not that well programmed AI thinking in Chessmaster X! GM Edition, maybe it’s the same with older versions, I don’t know.

You play against an, let’s say 1200 rated player and it sometimes plays according to that rating, sometimes it plays flawless!!! Most of the time I consider that 1200 to play about 1600 real life players. I mean I’ve played 1600 club players who did not know so much opening theory, strong positional middlegame, impressive final technique!!!

Did that occur to any of you guys out there or am I just hallucinating and should quit this game for ever? :( ((((

Chess software sort of works in this way:

In a program such as Chessmaster, the same engine is used to calculate all moves, regardless of which “personality” you’re playing against…. also, the program will find the 2nd best move in a position, the 3rd best move, the 4th best move, and so on…

Basically, the higher the personality’s “rating” the more likely it is to make the “best” or “2nd best” move in any situation. Probabilities are assigned for each personality as to how often they’ll make the “best”, “2nd best”, “3rd best”….down the the “worst” move in its move list.

This is why a AI personality ranked as an “expert’ or higher will occasionally make a totally boneheaded move, something that a human player ranked at that level would never do. It simply comes up with that one-in-a-thousand (or whatever the odds are) chance of making the 9th best move in a situation.

That’s why highly rated AI personalities will play “great” chess for a long series of moves, and then throw the game away by doing something “stupid”… it might take a long time for that to happen, but it eventually will, if it plays enough games.

The lower rated personalities, of course, are programmed to constantly make moves that are far down the “best to worst” move list, which is why they’re much easier to beat consistently, even by average to below average players.

Mastering the Chess Openings, Volume 1: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Modern Chess Openings

Mastering the Chess Openings, Volume 1: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Modern Chess Openings

$29.95

For most chess-players, opening study is sheer hard work. It is hard to know what is important and what is not, and when specific knowledge is vital, or when a more general understanding is sufficient. Tragically often, once the opening is over, a player won’t know what plan to follow, or even understand why his pieces are on the squares on which they sit. With this book John Watson seeks to help chess-players achieve a more holistic and insightful view of the openings. In his previous books on chess strategy, he explained vital concepts that had previously been the domain only of top-class players, and did so in ways that have enabled them to enter the general chess consciousness of club players. Here he does likewise for the openings, explaining how flexible thinking and notions such as ‘rule-independence’ can apply to the opening. Watson presents a wide-ranging view of the way in which top-class players really handle the opening, rather than an idealized and simplified model. This is a book that will make chess-players think hard about how they begin their games, while offering both entertainment and challenging material for study.
