One of the most popular games in the sphere of gaming is the call of duty series of games. Military forces are given specific assignments to carry out in these FPS (first person shooter) games. Call of Duty was first released in 2003, this series of mission based games was published by gaming giants Activision. The game featured many incidents from World War II, the game was a huge success. Call of Duty 2 was released because of the game’s popularity but Call of Duty 3 wasn’t successful as the previous two. Modern Warfare was the fourth installment in Call of Duty which was a hit with fans and critics alike, which hit the jackpot. All the previous games focused on World War II but this game got praise when it switched from World War II to tensions in the current world. In the series two more games, World at War and Modern Warfare 2 had overwhelming success and the latest game released in the series is Black ops, in 2010.
Black Ops caught the attention of die-hard FPS fans worldwide, for its unique setting. For the first time in the series this game focused on cold war, and therefore the game had a lot of hype before its release, within 24 hours the game sold 7 million copies. In the game, the player plays through the eyes of CIA covert operative Alex Mason, who is seen to be in captivity and is continuously interrogated by his silhouetted captors about his past. The game then plays in flashback where you have to complete various difficult missions where you take on the role of Alex Mason. The game won praise for its stunning visual effects and brilliant story telling. The game is based on several real incidents that took place during the cold war. One incident of huge significance historically that has been covered in the game is the Bay of Pigs incident.
Several game rating websites deeming the game to be on of the best game in 2010 and critics have mostly praised the game. However, the game stirred up huge controversy, just like Modern Warfare 2, because it shows the lead character Alex Mason, assassinating Fidel Castro, albeit a fake one. Sympathizers towards the communist saw this as a product of a capitalist American society and criticized the game for depicting Castro’s assassination. They saw the game as a ploy used by Americans to turn the world against communism. But despite the controversy, the new Call of Duty game manages to keep up the name of an already established and well reputed game series.
