What makes the most popular PS3 games to date so good?
First launched in November 2006, the Sony PS3 has become an industry leader in home gaming and is the third games console from the entertainment giant. Standing firm ground in fierce competition from Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo’s relative newcomer, the Wii, the PS3 distinguishes itself by offering players the chance to develop their gaming experience online, by syncing with other players through the PlayStation Network. With a new, slimmer model released in September 2009, to coincide with a new logo and branding, the console’s successful year finished with an impressive line up of games making players ‘most popular’ lists.
Though only released in November 2009, perhaps the PS3′s most eagerly awaited title yet, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, is already considered a modern classic in gaming circles. Perhaps the definitive action shooter game, Call of Duty 3 comes from the award-winning Infinity Ward, who were behind the game’s predecessors in the Call of Duty series which won wide-ranging critical praise for its cinematic interpretation of warfare; delivering an intense and action-packed experience centred around the highly technological and well-equipped 21st century soldier.
Still brand new though having gained a ridiculous number of column inches and five-star previews from the blogging community and gaming press is Assassin’s Creed II. The direct sequel to 2007′s Assassin’s Creed, this all-action game continues the premise of a bitter and hardened ancestral assassin, seeking vengeance for the death of his family through any means possible, with the suggestion that a bigger conspiracy is at play here too. Taking the player right round the world, and of course online too if they want, the game has a few surprising twists in it; not least the addition of a young Leonardo da Vinci, who appears with newly built weaponry for the gamer to choose from.
Continuing a theme of hyper-realistic action exploits is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. This role playing game sees the avatar fortune hunter Nathan Drake return for more shoot ‘em up antics in a hit for the award-winning Naughty Dog team of developers. Drawn back into the dark world of crime he had previously chosen to leave, Drake accepts a foolhardy offer of adventure into the Himalayan Valley, where danger and deception inevitably ensue.
Consisting of both God of War and God of War II, the God of War: Collection is a game fighter’s must-have box set, as the two epic action games sit perfectly together in terms of both a series and in following the development of the genre. Set in Ancient Greece, the premise, to slay the God of War, remains the same throughout, but the brutally realistic fight scenes bring with them a host of evil opponents and perhaps some of gaming’s toughest challenges yet. Scoring consistently full marks from the gaming press, the God of War games are already classic PS3 games and no doubt lead the way for even more advanced gaming options in the future.
