Building Traffic

Whether you have developed and published a website for commercial or hobbyist purposes, you will want people to frequent the site. That means you will need a steady flow of traffic to the site that is in a high volume. The ways in which you can build traffic to a site are varied. The most common and venerable method to employ is SEO: search engine optimization. Why is this method the common? It is a simple strategy that never fails to deliver on its traffic production generation.

For those not familiar with the term, SEO refers to the actual placement of the website listing in the search engines. The higher the listing is placed, the more organic traffic the site will receive. This is due to the fact that people generally do not look beyond the first 30 or so listings in the search engine results. So, boosting your site’s rankings in the top 30 remains recommended.

The means in which to boost a site’s search engine presence are not as complex as some assume. Often, they merely rely on performing a lot of proverbial legwork that will reap rewards in the long term. Here are a few of the common methods people will employ to boost search engine rankings:

Link building. This is the core of most search engine optimization/traffic building plans. Every link that is placed on the internet whether it be on other websites, blogs, link directories, or forum message boards counts as a vote for your site’s popularity. As such, the more links you acquire, the higher your rankings will be. However, it is best to place as many links as possible to relevant sites similar to yours. Randomly placed links on site’s that do not share similar content may not count as much towards SEO placement.

Keyword optimization. If your site sells homemade wine, you would want words like wine, homemade wine, make your own wine, etc to appear on the site. This is because these are the terms people will type into the search engines when they are looking for a site like yours. By incorporating these words into the text of your site, more people will stumble across it.

Place a decent site map on your landing page. A site map is basically a link listing to all the subpages for the site. While most people use it as a convenient and clear way visitors can reach the other pages on the site, a site map is also helpful to the search engine robots since it provides a gateway into totally indexing the entire site.

Submit content articles to article directories. These articles act not only as a means of direct traffic from the links in the article to the site, these articles are indexed in the search engines where they act as an excellent promotional tool for the site. When people stumble upon the articles via the search engines, they will eventually find their way to your site.

While these traffic building strategies may sound simple, they are all definitely effective ones. As such, they remain highly recommended to try.
